The protection system (10) comprises: a backrest structure (12) for supporting and protecting the back of the occupant (D) of the vehicle (V); a safety belt system (14) mounted on the backrest structure (12) to restrain the trunk of the occupant (D) to the backrest structure (12); a fixing mechanism (16) for releasably attaching the backrest structure (12) to a body (B) of the vehicle (V); and an electronic control unit (ECU) operatively connected to the fixing mechanism (16) and configured to cause the release of the backrest structure (12) from the body (B) of the vehicle (V) upon the occurrence of certain conditions in the event of an accident.
