A first group of interpolation computers, which performs an interpolation by means of a mean-value Interpolation Calculation, and a second group of interpolation computers, which performs an Interpolation which is not a mean-value Interpolation Calculation, will be provided. Each Interpolation computer performs an Interpolation Calculation for the missing pixel to calculate an Interpolation Candidate Value (M(h)).and calculates interpolated test values (M(t)) when treating pixels near the missing pixel as test pixels. A decision maker (4) selects one of the many interpolation computers based on test interpolation results. An issuer (5) selects the Interpolation Candidate Value issued by the Interpolation Computer selected by the decision maker (4) from the variety of Interpolation Candidate Values (M(h)) and issues the selected Interpolation Candidate Value. Interpolation can be performed in such a way that the interpolated pixel does not look unnatural,and that, nevertheless, the storage capacity and the amount of data processing required are relatively small.
