PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a sample of a noble metal bipyramid nanocrystal having an extremely low degree of polydispersity (variation) in size and shape from a mixed noble metal nanocrystal sample. This sample contains a sample containing high-purity, substantially monodisperse plasmon gold bipyramid nanocrystals. Further, the present invention provides a method for growing a secondary twin metal nanocrystal using a noble metal bipyramid nanocrystal as a seed crystal particle. Like the seed bipyramid nanocrystals for growth, the secondary nanocrystals are twin nanocrystals and are characterized by an extremely low degree of polydispersity in size and shape. Secondary twin nanocrystals grown by these methods include enlarged metal bipyramid nanocrystals and nanocrystals with anisotropic "dumbbell" shapes with various tip shapes. Further, the present invention provides a method of heating a reaction solution by using a precious metal bipyramid nanocrystal as a plasmon heater and undergoing plasmon photothermal radiation-heat conversion.
