Provided is a method for estimating a state of a subject in consideration of an individual difference. The present invention includes: a step for using a statistical model through which parameters are estimated from first data that has a plurality of pairs of data including change rates of the pupil areas of a plurality of persons and data pertaining to states of the plurality of persons, and estimating a state of a subject from second data including a change rate of the pupil area of the subject; and a step for outputting the estimated result for the state of the subject. In addition, the statistical model is a hierarchical Bayesian model in which a linear predictor is the sum of an intercept, a product of a partial regression coefficient and an explanatory variable, and a parameter indicating the individual difference, and which is obtained by using ordered logistic regression.
