Solid solution nitriding of steel composition and its stainless steel

The present disclosure provides a method for producing an iron-based alloy, as well as the resulting alloy. An iron base alloy containing a small amount of nickel (e.g., 0.5-2.0 wt%) is annealed and machined. While the alloy has sufficient ductility to reduce the possibility of cracking, it is not high enough and results in a hardened alloy. After forming the alloy, the alloy is hardened by nitriding.
