Liquid-free traps for acidic or basic airborne molecular contaminants at trace levels in gases are described herein. In one aspect of the invention described herein, the liquid-free trap comprises a rigid sintered hydrophilic material located in a housing comprising an inlet and an outlet, a flow path between the inlet and outlet, and a flow path between the inlet and outlet within the housing. The hard sintered hydrophilic material is about 0.05 mole milligram equivalents to about 10 mole milligram equivalents of base species to trap acidic airborne molecular contaminants in the gas, or about 0.05 mole milligram equivalents to about 10 moles equivalent to trap basic air molecular contaminants in the gas. Contains milligram equivalents of mountain species. Methods of detecting or measuring trace levels of acidic or basic airborne molecular contaminants using liquid-free traps are also described.
