The present invention relates to coatings for implantable medical devices. The coating contains a layer composite comprising at least one polyelectrolyte multilayer and at least one functionalized nanodiamond layer. At least one polyelectrolyte multilayer is composed of positively charged and negatively charged polyelectrolyte monolayers in an alternating manner. In addition, the functionalized nanodiamond is functionalized with at least one bioactive agent. The invention also relates to a method for making a coating for an implantable medical device, the use of such a coating, and to an implantable medical device having such a coating.
