A method for displaying a virtual image on a stereoscopic display system having a display matrix. The virtual image represents the side of individually renderable traces visible to the user's eyes. The method includes, for each trace of the visible surface, illuminating a pixel of the display matrix. The pixels to be illuminated are selected based on the pupil position of the eye as determined by the stereoscopic display system. For each trace of the visible surface, a virtual image of the illuminated pixel is formed in the plane in front of the eye. The virtual image is located on a straight line through the trace, plane, and pupil location. In this way, the virtual image tracks changes in the user's pupil position.
