A method for displaying a virtual image on a stereoscopic display system having a display matrix. A virtual image represents the surface of individually renderable traces that are visible to the user's eyes. The method includes illuminating a pixel of the display matrix for each trace of the visible surface. The pixels to be illuminated are selected based on the pupil location of the eye as determined by the stereoscopic display system. For each trace of the visible surface, a virtual image of the illuminated pixel is formed in the plane in front of the eye. The virtual image is located on a straight line passing through the trace, plane, and pupil positions. In this way, the virtual image tracks changes in the pupil location of the user.
