The panel mask(s) rendered on the display panel(s) of the head mounted display (HMD) may be dynamically sized (increased and decreased) as needed to hide unwanted visual artifacts from the view. For example, if the frames are rendered on the HMD''s display panel using re-projection, the size value associated with at least a portion of the panel mask is adjusted based on the rotation of the HMD to resize at least a portion of the panel mask at the current size. It can be increased or decreased to the adjusted size, and the panel mask can be rendered as at least part of the panel mask rendered at the adjusted size to hide unwanted visual artifacts. The size of a portion of the panel mask may continue to decrease over a period of time when re-projection ceases and/or head rotation ceases or slows down.
