The invention relates to a method for improving the vision of a visually impaired person with an electronic visual aid which is held manually in front of the eye. The electronic visual aid comprises a camera module, an image memory, a microprocessor for image modification, a display unit that is operated close to the eye, sensors for detecting head movement and for detecting whether the visual aid is on the eye. The method comprises detecting whether the visual aid is attached to the eye, viewing the surroundings in video mode, creating a modified still image, reproducing the still image or an image section, and moving the image section locally by means of movements of the visual aid attached to the head. The section shift is adjusted in such a way that disruptive effects such as trembling movements of the person are reduced. When the visual aid is removed from the head, the movement will stop and the image will freeze. When the visual aid is brought back to the eye, the shift can be continued.
