A method of synthesizing a polyoxometalate compound involves heating a metal precursor in the presence of an organic salt. The polyoxometalate compounds produced herein exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields and photoluminescence maximums in the blue and/or violet regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
