The present invention provides: an organic thin film which is capable of achieving excellent electron injection properties and electron transport properties if used in an electron injection layer of an organic EL element; and a coating composition which is suitable for use in the production of this organic thin film; and a material for organic EL elements, said material serving as a starting material for this organic thin film or this coating composition. The present invention provides an organic thin film which is characterized by being: a single film that contains a first material which is a compound having a structure represented by general formula (1) and a second material which transports electrons; or a multilayer film that is composed of a film containing the first material and another film containing the second material. (In general formula (1), X¹ and X² may be the same or different, and each represents an optionally substituted nitrogen atom, oxygen atom, sulfur atom or a divalent linking group; L represents a direct bond or a p-valent linking group; n represents a number of 0 or 1; p represents a number from 1 to 4; q represents a number of 0 or 1, and in cases where p is 1, q is 0; R¹ to R³ may be the same or different, and each represents a monovalent substituent; and m¹ to m³ may be the same or different, and each represents a number from 0 to 3.)
