Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is an imaging method for determining the distribution of magnetic particles in a volume. The magnetization properties of magnetic nanoparticles are used to determine their local distribution in the volume. The previous standard method for calibrating an MPI apparatus has significant disadvantages. The invention creates a method for calibrating an MPI apparatus which goes beyond the previous approaches and eliminates previous disadvantages. This is achieved in that, for the calibration of a system function, this is described by a novel approach, which is given by a weighted and preferably linear combination of temporal translations of approach functions based on the applied magnetic field.
