Present invention is related to the functionalization of antimicrobial metal-based nanoparticles with the negatively charged ligands (such as carboxyl or polyethylene glycol) that increase their biocompatibility. An antibacterial metal-based nanoparticles (such as CuO and Ag) with certain surface functionalization (such as COOH and polyethylene glycol) are used in antibacterial products to decrease nanoprticle cytotoxicity to human cells and, thus, to increase the biocompatibility. Nanoparticles according to invention are safer to the human cells and to the environment compared to unfunctionalized CuO nanoparticles and especially Ag nanoparticles, since they are less toxic to human cells and do not cause inflammation in the immune cells and have good antibacterial properties.
