Examples of techniques for qualitative mechanics based system modeling are described herein. An aspect includes receiving sensor data corresponding to control commands from an industrial system. Another aspect includes determining a first system configuration of the industrial system. Another aspect includes generating first qualitative virtual sensor (QLVS) data based on a qualitative mechanics based simulation of application of the control commands to the first system configuration. Another aspect includes comparing the first QLVS data to the sensor data from the industrial system. Another aspect includes determining whether a threshold is met by the comparing of the first QLVS data to the sensor data. Another aspect includes, based on the threshold not being met, generating a revised system configuration based on the comparing the first QLVS data to the sensor data.
