Pipette for use with a pipette tip, comprising - a stem-shaped pipette housing, - a neck at the lower end of the pipette housing, for clamp-fitting a pipette tip, the upper end of which has a collar with an attachment opening, - a drive mechanism comprising a drive element for moving a displacement element for suctioning liquid samples into the pipette tip and ejecting the samples from the pipette tip, and an operating element which protrudes from the pipette housing and is movable relative to the pipette housing, - a sensing device with a sensing element which is adjacent to the neck, is movable relative to the pipette housing in the longitudinal direction of the neck and which moves the pipette tip by means of the collar, when the pipette tip is clamped onto the neck, and - a mechanical indicator device which is coupled to the sensing device, wherein the sensing device is designed to set an indicator of the indicator device, which is dependent on the position of the sensing element relative to the pipette housing, in order to set an indicator, dependent on the type of pipette tip, by the clamping, onto the neck, of a pipette tip with a collar height that identifies the type of the pipette tip.
