The invention relates to a method and a device for monitoring a shaft seal ring which is received in a chamber housing at least partly filled with oil and which is provided on a shaft part. The chamber housing is rotatably mounted and can be released or blocked by a brake, in particular an electromagnetically actuatable brake. A rotational speed curve of the shaft part over time is specified cyclically in a recurring manner, wherein each cycle has a first time interval, during which a rotational speed curve that can change in a time-dependent manner is specified, and a second time interval which follows the first time interval and during which the rotational speed curve is specified as a constant rotational speed that does not run off and a frictional torque is determined.
