A cooling system 36 for a rail vehicle 10 having an internal combustion engine 32 as a generator of electricity is operative to exchange heat between a cooling fluid circulating in a cooling circuit connected to the internal combustion engine 32 and air located in an underfloor space 28 of the rail vehicle 10. A heat exchanger 38 and a fan 40, located in the underfloor space 28, are fluidly connected to an exhaust 21 in a side skirt 14 depending from a floor 18 of the rail vehicle 10. The fan 40 is operative to force air from the underfloor space 28 through the heat exchanger 38 and through the exhaust 21 to an ambient space 46 located on an external side of the side skirt 14.
