10,991. Hardingham, G. G. M. June 16. Loading and unloading; elevators.-R e 1 a t e s to apparatus for transferring coal or similar cargo from a lighter A to a steam or other ship B or wharf. The transferring-gear is carried by a barge or float C, and consists of a transverse conveyer or elevator E, which may be formed of plates attached to links and having turned - up sides, while s o m e of them have turned - up backs so as to form receptacles. The leading edge of each plate is downwardly curved so as to fit snugly against the trailing edge of the next plate. The chain is supported on rollers fitted to some of the joint pins. The conveyer is made in two sections, each arranged about a carrier F having rails or guides for the rollers and mounted on rollers f sliding on inclined guides G mounted in a framing H. When being moved from place to place, the sections of the conveyer are housed within the barge. Motion is transmitted from a shaft I, through bevel gear, as shown, to bevel-wheels i3 having a sliding connection with shafts i4 which operate the conveyer drums through bevel gearing. The tension of the conveyers is adjusted by nuts e5, the lower drum of each conveyer having sliding bearings. Shafts M may be connected to the motor so as to operate, through bevel gearing, pinions gearing with racks F2 on the carriers. Two hoppers or collectors L and L1 and a shoot K are provided. The shoot may have a detachable extension. Specification No. 2140, A.D. 1890, which describes an arrangement for delivering coal at the extremity of a barge, is referred to.
