12,866. Paul, M. J. June 8. Loading and unloading; conveyers; elevators.- Consists of apparatus for transferring coal &c. from ships or lighters to ships or wharves. Fig. 6 shows an apparatus for transferring coal from a collier to a wharf, transversely of the barge carrying the apparatus. Conveyer arms F4, F5 are pivoted to standards H1, and to one of them, F4, is connected by plates S a swinging elevator arm F3. The arms F4, F5 are set at any desired angle by tackle q wound on drums q3, and are retained by studs r2 raised and lowered by rack-and-pinion gear r3. An endless conveyer chain runs through the arms F4, F5, and, in order that variations of their angles may not affect its passage, the arms are connected to the standards, as shown in Figs. 10 and 11. The upper rails f on which the conveyer chains run, are connected to pivoted quadrants f 5, the space between which is bridged by a fixed block f10 ; the lower rails f3 are loosely connected to pivoted arms p2, the space between the arms being bridged by a block p. The coal &c. is conducted from the elevator F3 to a hopper L3, Fig. 7, at the end of the arm F4 by a plate s2 hinged to the arm F3. The conveyer chain in the arms F4, F5 is driven by a drum at J' and drives the elevator F3 by a belt s6. The conveyer and elevator chains are composed of plates e, Fig. 5, secured to the links e' and bent up to form sides e2, a certain number being also bent to form bottoms e3. The forward end of one plate curves closely under the trailing end of the next, thus preventing escape of dust through a wide range of relative inclination. The apparatus may be arranged on the wharf &c. instead of on a barge. In a modification, suitable for tranferring coal from a lighter to a ship's bunkers, and, as before, mounted transversely on a barge &c., a conveyer, having at its lower end the arm F3, is mounted in a position inclined upwards from the lighter, and consists of two frames, each containing an independently-driven endless-chain conveyer, such as shown in Fig. 5. The two frames are slidingly mounted so that they can be drawn inboard when not in use, and the conveyer chains are driven by shafting and gearing which allows of this movement. Specification No. 2140, A.D. 1890, is referred to.
