5972. Gibberd, F. March 21. Painting.-Relates to a portable appliance for cleaning, blacking, colouring, or polishing boots, shoes, gaiters, leather bags, and other articles. Fig. 1-shows a longitudinal section of the complete appliance. Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of the metal outer case. The bottom of the metal case a is closed by a block f provided with a polishing- pad g. On withdrawing the spring-held slide w, the blacking &c. tin i is pressed upwards by the spring k and applies blacking &c. to the brush l which is secured to the coiled spring o. When the slide w is replaced, the projection 3 releases the catch p, and the brush l is turned by the spring o into the operative position, indicated on the drawing by dotted lines. In modification, a removable brush fits a case provided with a recess containing a spring-held tin of blacking &c.
