Improvements in Reversing-valve Controlling Gear of Steering Engines or other Engines of Reversing-valve Types.

Steering-gear.-Relates to steering-engines, and to other engines of the reversing-valve type requiring perfect control, and comprises means for relieving the operator of the continuous manual effort of following up the automatic action of the engine. To this end, friction cone clutches 3, 3A are provided, whereby the rotary nut, which is geared to the engine shaft and in which the screwed valve-spindle 6A works, is locked to the said spindle by an adjustment of the hand-wheel 4 or of the shaft 5B leading to the bridge. Thus after an adjustment of the reversing-valve 1 to start the engine, the engine runs until the hand-wheel 4 or shaft 5B is arrested. On this taking place the relative movement of the screw 6A in its nut restores the valve 1 to its neutral position and stops the engine. The primary movement of the hand-wheel 4 or shaft 5B, which adjusts the valve 1 to start the engine, is caused to engage one or other of the clutches 3 or 3A by means of the screw 6. Springs 8 are provided to ensure resilient action, and slits may be cut in the male cones for the same purpose.
