Steam-generator &c. furnaces; mechanical stoking; grates; dampers.-In the furnace shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the coal is continuously fed from the hopper A through the shaft B or gasefying-chamber to the inclined grate D, the air for combustion being introduced under pressure from the pipe R through the vertical grid F and through the coal. The grate D can be varied in inclination by means of the suspending-chains G and worm or other gearing H. The shaft B is partly formed by the firebrick bridge C. The vertical grid F is pivoted at S. To retain the fuel in the hopper A, the rake M, which is connected with the rack Z, can be advanced between the bars of the grid F by the handle X on the shaft of the rack pinion. A front door T is provided, and the doors K or upper flaps provide for the admission of air to the fuel when the draught is not forced. Secondary air which is heated is conducted to the furnace by the conduits r.
