Indicators, route, for vehicles.-The destination boards are made in the form of stencils of metal &c., with a light-transmitting material such as xylonite secured to the back, or they may be made of a framework of metal &c. carrying the xylonite &c., and painted or otherwise marked with the name of the destination. The boards are made interchangeable, each being adapted for insertion in the frame X, Fig. 2, on the front or rear of a tramcar &c., and also for suspension on hooks Fig. 6, at the sides of the car. The frame X, Fig. 2. is formed with grooves A, B, to receive two or more boards, and is pivoted in the fixed frame Y, Fig. 1, through the front of which the name of the destination is displayed. A pulley or segment of a pulley C fixed on the shaft of the frame X is connected by a cord or chain D to a similar pulley on the handle F, by the operation of which the frame is turned to alter the indication. A pawl G on the handle engages with a projection on the supporting-bracket E, to retain the indicator in the position in which it is set. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 6, the two boards are suspended by cords or chains I passing over pulleys, and a weighted bar K is attached on one side, to over- balance the board at the other end of the cords &c., this bar being connected by cords &c, passing over a stepped pulley to the handle F, or to a separate handle. The operation of the handle raises the bar K and the indicator connected thereto, and lowers the other board into the indicating position. When the bar K is connected to the handle F, all the indicators are altered by one operation. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8, the indicators are altered by the reversal of the trolley bnom, the revoluble portion of the trolley stand being pro- vided on each side with a toothed segment adapted to gear with a pinion on the upper end of the vertical shaft Q. On the lower end of this shaft is a cam R, which, when turned, effects the opera- tion of the indicators through the spring-controlled rods S. The operating-cords M and the stepped pulleys L of the lateral indicators are shown in this Figure.
