6634. McFarlane, J., and Reinohl, D. C. March 18. Fatty oils.-Relates to the extraction and purification of cotton-seed oil. Cotton seed, de-linted or otherwise, is soaked in alkaline lye, at a temperature of 100‹-150‹ F., with or without the addition of saccharine matter, such as black molasses, in which corrosive agents have been developed by fermentation or by the action of foreign agents. The hulls open and separate from the kernels, and the latter absorb alkali and are readily crushed. The crushed mash is heated to open the oil cells and evaporate water, and the oil is extracted in a suitable filter-press or by other means. Alkali is added to the oil until it breaks ; it is then agitated and treated with salt. After settling, the oil is separated from the foots.
