26,519. Oppenheimer, H. Dec. 28. Counting-apparatus.-Relates to stamping and registering apparatus for printing or impressing mail matter so as to dispense with the ordinary adhesive stamps. One form of apparatus is shown in vertical section in Fig. 2. A cam disc n is operated by clockwork provided with a releasing wheel or catch, and in turn operates a stampcarrier frame b. The stamp-carrier c is a manysided wheel suspended in the frame b. The carrier-spindle is provided with a gear-wheel r adapted to be engaged by a gear-wheel q on a spindle d provided with a handle o. The spindle d is normally held outwards by a spring p, and a pin h on the spindle slides over undulations on a guidebox i, and causes the wheels r, q to be alternately engaged and disengaged on turning the spindle. Other pins on the spindle d operate angular levers s and stop discs t for spring-retained buttons or knobs of counters such as g2, g5, g10, releasing one button at a time in accordance with the reading of an index finger v on the handle o. The button is only released on disengaging the wheels r, q, and is maintained released until the spindle d is again operated. The button-spindles pass between a common arrester l and the corresponding angular counter pawl m, and release the stamping- mechanism and counter on return by two-tooth movements. A date or other stamp k is connected with the stamping-mechanism. Inking-apparatus of ordinary form may be used. Coin-freed apparatus may be used, that shown in Fig. 7 having a single slot and coin shoot 2 ; the coin 3 is used to release the button-stop lever 4, and retained by a pin 8 on the stamping-mechanism until operation. Electrically-actuated apparatus is shown in Fig. 9, single-impression apparatus being represented for simplicity. The stamp-carrier c is connected to the core of an electromagnet 11, and is returned by a spring 12. A second electromagnet 13 has a movable core 17 connected to a pivoted frame 15, which carries an ink-wheel 16 adapted to pass over a pad 18 and the stamp-carrier. On pulling a handle 19 of a rod 20, a rod 22 is engaged and actuates a toothed wheel 25 by means of a pawl 24, and a contact disc 26 closes the circuit of the magnet 13. The circuit of the magnet 11 is closed by a disc 32, toothed wheel 31, claw 30, lever 29, rod 28, and lever 27 from the core 17, the circuit of the magnet 13 being simultaneously interrupted. The work support 33 descends and similarly inter. rupts the circuit of the magnet 11. A catch 40 co-operates with the rod 22, and is released by means of a rod 41 on the support 33. The counter 39 is actuated by a pawl 38 of the magnet 11. The handle 19 replaces the handle o, Fig. 2, and may be coin-released.
