27,234. Crease, J. F. Dec. 10. Torpedo nets made of galvanized steel-wire rope or other material are fixed and fitted to the sides and bottoms of war-ships, especially that class of ship described in Specification No. 7808, A.D. 1896, by fastening their upper and lower edges to projecting longitudinal .teel plates or shelves a, a', Fig. 2, or to projecting steel arms f, f1, Fig. 4, fixed at right-angles to the ship's side for that purpose. The torpedo nets d can be extended so as to produce a firm and even surface at a fixed distance from the sides of the ship, and are not moved out of position by the motion of the ship through the water when underweigh. The lower shelf a1 is fitted, or the lower arms f1 are fitted, with pulleys b around which pass the downhaul ropes c attached to the steel tubing e along the lower edge of the torpedo net. The net is rolled up by means of the wire ropes or clewlines h, which pass round the tube e of the net. The net is housed on the upper shelf or on the upper projecting arms. In a modified arrangement, the lower part of the net is fixed on a bilge keel or projecting arms and the net extends downwards beyond the tubes e to such a depth as to cover, when hanging loosely in the water, the keel of the ship.
