Memorandum appliances.-Messages or appointments can be written upon a continuous strip of paper, which is then moved so as to hide the writing, and can be inspected only by a person having be key of the desk in which it is contained. The desk or box a has an aperture c in its sloping lid b, to allow of writing upon the paper e, which passes over the fixed board g. The reserve of paper is rolled on the cylinder d, held by a spring f, and is drawn off between india-rubber covered rollers h, n, by turning an external knob on the spindle i. The writing having thus been removed from the aperture c, a ratchet-wheel and pawl k prevent its return. By unlocking the desk, and raising the lid which is hinged at m, the message can be seen on the strip e. A pointer o with handle p can be moved to show that there is a message within the desk. A modification is described in which there is only one receiving-roller h, upon which the paper is rolled. The pawl k has then to be raised and the roller unwound, to read the message.
