Sifting fireclay, ores, &c.-In a mortar mill or mill for grinding fireclay, marl, gold quartz, or other ores, sandstone, slag, and the like, the sloping side e of the pan, and the bottom are perforated, so as to act as sieves, and one or more auxiliary rollers f are employed for finer grinding, and to facilitate sifting. These rollers f are suspended by arms g pivoted at g1 and with a spring attachment h to the main frame. A clearance space may be left between the edgerunners and the pan bottom to separate stones, which may be prevented from passing beneath the auxiliary rollers f by scrapers or baffleplates. The side e of the pan may be vertical or a false perforated side may be placed within an ordinary pan, while the bottom need not be perforated ; or a perforated pan with auxiliary rollers may be used, beneath and in conjunction with an ordinary mill ; or the perforated pan may be used in conjunction with a pug mill. The auxiliary rollers may be of any form, and may be grooved, fluted, or corrugated, or not. Dust may be screened from the ground material by wire screens in the side wall of the lower pan, scrapers being provided on the underside of the upper pan to facilitate screening. The perforations in the pan may be of graded sizes, and the graded ground material may then be received into different receptacles.
