The Production of Two Coloured Effects upon Straw or Mixed Straw and Chip Plaits.

Dyeing.-Relates to methods of producing twocolour effects upon split straw, or mixed straw and chip, plaits by dyeing with sulphide or sulphur colours in a cold bath, and subsequently rinsing and cleaning or bleaching by means of acids, or by a treatment with sulphurous acids or peroxide of hydrogen. The wooden chips and the rough inner surface of the straw take the dye, while the smooth outer surface of the straw remains almost colourless. The dry material is immersed for 15-30 minutes in a dye-bath containing 20 grammes Immedial Black, 10 to 15 grammes sodium sulphide, 3 grammes soda, and 20 grammes desiccated Glauber's salt per litre. The plaits are then rinsed and slightly acidified or bleached to clean the light parts which have been turned yellow by the soda, and finally thoroughly rinsed again.
