Buttons.-Inlaid vegetable-ivory buttons, instead of being grooved as shown in Fig. 1 to receive the inlay b, Fig. 2, of mother-of-pearl, wood, bone, celluloid, vulcanite, leather, pasteboard with or without a tissue covering, real or artificial stone, metal covered with fabric if desired, glass, porcelain, earthenware, or vegetable-ivory, are recessed to a curved dovetail shape, as shown in Fig. 3, to receive an inlay shaped to suit, as shown in Fig. 4. The upper face of the inlay may be below, or flush with, the sides of the button, and may be concave, convex, or ornamental. The body of the button may be recessed as shown in Fig. 10. The holes for stitching may be vertical or horizontal. An adhesive may be used to secure the parts together. To protect the buttons against damp, the finished buttons, or the bodies only, are soaked in oil, preferably in linseed-oil varnish.
