Moulding bricks etc.; pug-mills.-A machine with a horizontal mould-plate is used for moulding bricks, blocks and tiles, of sand, lime, &c., and briquettes of artificial fuel or the like. The materials receive a preliminary mixing in the vessel 1, where they may be heated by a jet of steam or otherwise, and then pass down a shoot or passage into the pug-mill 7. The pug-mill has two vertical shafts 12, driven by bevel and spur gearing 13, 15 from the shaft 14, with blades 43 at their lower ends rotating in opposite directions. The blades, which may slope upwards and overlap each other, force the material into the moulds in the plate 8 through mouths 9, preferably corresponding in shape to the moulds, for which a support 46 acts as a temporary bottom during filling. The arrangement for driving the compressors 27, Fig. 2, from the shaft 16 consists of spur-wheels 19, 20, with a crank-pin 28 attached to the wheel 20 and connected by a spring rod 29 to a lever 30, itself connected to a shaft 31, to which is secured a double lever 32 driving the pivoted levers 34 connected to the compressors 27 by links 36. The moulded articles are extruded on to a creeper 45, Fig. 1, or the like by a plunger 41 operated from the shaft 14 by a cam or eccentric 42. The mouldplate 8 is intermittently rotated from the shaft 23 by means of a cam or eccentric 24 acting against the rod or rods 25, provided with a pawl, which takes into the ratchet-wheel 26. The cam 39 on the same shaft, acting on the weighted lever 38, forces a catch 37 into notches 40 on the plate 8 when it is required to be held in a fixed position for the filling, compression, and extrusion ; these operations are arranged to take place simultaneously.
