Boiling; m a t erials, fibrous; processes; strainers; washing pulp.-Relates to a method of treating corn stalks, sugar canes, and like pithy stalks so as to obtain, for paper making purposes, both the fibres of the outer parts of the stalks and the cells of the soft inner parts at the s a m e operation. The stalks are cut up and treated in a digester or rotary boiler for say, 6 hours, at a pressure of 60 lbs. per square inch, with a solution containing a suitable amount of caustic soda, such as 20 per cent. of the dryweight of the stalks. The cooked pulp is run out into a draining-vat. The liquor is used for purposes unspecified, while the solid matter is washed and run into a beating or similar engine A, provided with washers B, covered with perforated metal sheets or wire mesh, which retain the fibres and let the pith-cells through. The latter, if mixed with too much water to be used directly in the wet machine, are allowed to settle in tanks D, and part of the water is drawn off the pith-cells and the fibres may be used for paper-making either separately or together.
