Loading and unloading; conveyers.-Relates to endless-rope conveyers for the above purpose, and consists of means for preventing variations in tension in the rope due to the relative movement of the vessels. On the vessel where the rope is driven, it is passed over a series of pulleys, of which one set, mounted on a shaft 13, is movable towards the other set under the pull of the rope and against the thrust of a plunger 23 connected to the shaft 13 and acted on by compressed air or by steam &c. The cylinder in which the plunger moves is fitted with a safety-valve 29 and a pressure gauge, and, in the pipe supplying the pressure fluid is a three-way cock 32, which plunger opens when near the end of its outward stroke to allow escape of pressure-fluid, and which is returned by a spring to its former position on the return of the plunger consequent on the reduction of pressure.
