Frames;hulls keels; plates.-In boats, barges. and other vessels, the edges of the skin plates are thickened up or flanged, and they are connected together by inserting these edges into grooves in bars of T-section. The grooves are formed in the sides of the bars, as shown in Fig. 3, or in their T-heads, as shown in Fig. 7. The keel is formed of these bars in conjunction with transverse stiffeners. When the thickened edges have been inserted into the grooves, the outer lips of the bars are closed down on the plates to make a tight joint.
