Worm gearing.- Relates to means for converting the regular rotation of a driving-shaft into reciprocating and rotary motion, or intermittent r e - ciprocating and rotary motion, of a driven shaft or spindle. S u c h motion is obtained in a worm and wheel gearing by providing a special periodic divergence from the normal helical pitch of the worm thread. Fig. 2 shows the form of thread adopted to obtain an intermittent reciprocating and rotary motion. The worm 2 mounted on a driving-shaft 1 has a thread which is straight as at 3 for a certain length, a portion 4 is inclined in one direction, and a third portion 8 is inclined in a reverse direction. The worm may be built up in segments, or may be cut by a profiling or milling tool. The teeth of the driven wheel 5, which is fixed to the shaft or spindle 6, are provided on each side with the necessary clearance to ensure smooth working.
