An Improved Knife for Fleshing Pelts or Hides, and Machine for Sharpening the Cutting Edge thereof.

Sharpening ; bevelling.-A knife for fleshing pelts and hides comprises a flat blade 1 with a bevelled edge 8 which is fastened to the concave side of a bent back-piece 2, either directly, as in Fig. 5, or, as shown in Fig. 2, by a channelled pressure plate 5 fixed by screws 6, which pass through slotted openings in the blade and thus allow of forward adjustment. Handles 7 are provided, and, when in position, the knife rests on the end 4 of the back-piece and the bevel edge of the blade. By altering the upward inclination of the bevel, the height of the cutting-edge above the pelt &c. may be adjusted. The blade is sharpened in the machine shown in Fig. 5. Screws 11 passing through the handles 7 are placed in rests 12 on a slide 13 capable of moving over the horizontal grinding-disc 14. By adjusting the screws, the bevel to which the blade is ground may be altered. A second grinding-disc of finer grade may be provided, and the discs can be adjusted vertically by screws 17.
