25,538. Henderson, J. M. Nov. 24. Elevated railways; rope railways; electric railways; electric locomotives. - Relates to a method of lifting, transporting, and depositing materials for use in shipbuilding yards, bridge and harbour works, pit excavation, &c. Transverse girders a of any suitable length are carried on vertical or inclined supporting beams c at each end of an aerial cableway b. The cable ends are secured to carriages h capable of travelling along the transverse girders, or one or both ends of the cable may be fixed One or more hoisting and travelling load carriages i are suspended from the cables. Fig. 3 shows the cable - supporting carriage. A strong framing carries an electromotor driving the worm l and worm-wheel m, and the motion is transmitted through spur and bevel gearing to the horizontal travelling wheels v, which by their friction on the plates w of the transverse girder cause the carriage to travel. The weight of the carriage is taken by the wheels x. The main cable b is secured to a bolt z by a tension regulating and oscillating device, and the hauling-rope j is also attached by a tension-regulating bolt and nut. The load carriage, Fig. 5, is suspended from the cable by three wheels 1, and carries an electromotor 2 driving the shaft 5 through spur gearing. The motion may be transmitted from this shaft either to the hauling-rope wheels 13, or to a duplex winding- barrel revolving loosely on the shaft 12, through suitably-operated clutches. The lifting-rope 28 passes round one of the pulleys 29, over a compensating-pulley 31, and back to the other pulley of the block 30 and to the winding-drum. Band brakes are provided both for the traversing and the lifting drums, the former operated by a pedal and the latter by a hand-wheel 34 and right and left handed screw 36. The motive power used in the case shown is electricity, preferably a threephase current, which is supplied to the motor 2 by wires and collector arms fixed on the carriage. The operator occupies the platform 38, and a controller 39 is fixed in a convenient position. Any motive power or a combination of two or more may be used for operating the carriages. The load or end carriage or both may be worked from below, and ladders may be erected on the supporting- beams to enable operators to ascend.
