Buffer and like stops; delivering or passing vehicles on inclines.-A powercontrolled sliding frame with automatic catches is used in conjunction with weighing-machines and on mine or other railways to receive and entrap wagons and t o deliver them when required, after bringing them to rest without shock. Figs. 1 and 3 show one arrangement, in which the sliding frame 2 works in guides 4 between the rails 1. Pivoted catches 7, 8, weighted at their outer ends, engage the axles of the wagon and lock it in position. As the wagon moves on to the frame in the direction a, the catch 7 is depressed on to the stop 7a, but the catch 8 engages the axle, and the catch 7 afterwards resumes its normal position. After the weighing or other operation, the frame is moved in the direction a, and the catches 7 first force the wagon forward and then deliver it after it has been released from the catches 8 by the action of the knob 13 on the rod 10, which compresses the spring 12 against the fixed bracket 11 and depresses the catch 8 against the stop 8a by means of the lever 9. The sliding frame 2 is operated in this case by a piston 15, which has a thick piston-rod 14 and works in the fixed fluid-pressure cylinder 16. Under normal conditions, the working fluid supplied by the pipe 17 is admitted by the regulating- valve 19 to both sides of the piston, which results in the frame being pushed to its extreme left-hand position. Shock is prevented by a buffer or by a cushioning action on the piston at the left-hand end of the cylinder. The momentum given to the frame, when the truck is run on, is gradually reduced by the elastic resistance to the motion of the piston 15, and the frame is finally returned to its original position without shock. To deliver the wagon, the weighted valve 22 is opened by depressing the pedal 25, thereby relieving the pressure on the right-hand side of the piston. During the latter operation, the smaller valve 19 may be allowed to leak, or may be closed automatically by linkwork connected to the foot-pedal. If steam is used, a steam trap in the pipe 20 is added to the apparatus. Various means for traversing the sliding frame are mentioned, including a cylinder with slide valves, rack-andpinion mechanism positively driven in each direction, or with the return motion effected by a counterweight and chain, and an electric solenoid in which the current is reversed. In a modified arrangement, the catches themselves slide in vertical guides, and are counterweighted or spring- controlled as before.
