26,778. Payne, E. E. M. Dec. 8. Tanning ;tannins and tannic liquors.-Active tanning-agents are extracted from waste materials of a tannery by means of caustic soda or other alkali. The liquor is rendered neutral, if necessary, and neutral or slightly acid skins or hides are immersed and subsequently treated with acetic acid. The leather thus produced may then be treated with other tanning-materials.
