Sifting flour and meal.-Reduced wheat or middlings, break meal, &c. are sifted through a vertical cylinder h of silk or other material by means of beaters d2. The beaters d2 are attached to the revolving drum d, and are arranged so as to raise the material which is fed in at the inlet j and to throw it against the cylinder h, the overtails passing out by a spout l at the top. The material passing through the cylinder h falls to the bottom of the space m between it and an outer casing c. A brush o attached to a toothed ring q driven by a pinion s keeps the outside of the cylinder h clean, and a brush u hanging from the ring q sweeps the sifted material to the outlet n. Modifications are described, in which the cylinder h and the casing c rotate, and the brush u is stationary or has a longitudinal movement, and in which the space m is divided by horizontal partitions into compartments corresponding to portions of the cylinder h of different mesh.
