8933. Le Febvre, F. X. April 27. Mail-bag catchers and dischargers.- Relates to means for transferring mail bags and parcels to or from moving trains with minimum shock. The discharger on the vehicle consists of an oblique arm 5, on which the bag &c. is suspended and is retained by a clip 7. The fixed catcher has arms 10, Figs. 2 and 3, which are bent as shown, so that when the bag strikes it is slipped off from the arm 5 and dropped into the basket 21, from which it falls into the lock-up receptacle 22. The innermost bars 10 are bent to give a V- shaped opening to ensure entry of the suspension 6, and the whole grid is pivoted vertically at 11, being normally held in the inoperative position, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, by a weight and cord or by a spring 19. It is held extended for collection by a detent 20, which is displaced by the impact of the bag. For collecting on to the vehicle, similar sets of oblique bars 511, 100 are fitted to the track structure and car respectively, the bag being dropped on to a plate 102, which is hinged to the car so as to fold up when out of use. To allow for transference of bags when the train travels in the opposite direction to that shown by the arrow, the bar 5 and supporting-rod 8 are removed from the brackets 19 and are reversed. The rods 10 are reversed by rotating them about the pivot 14, and locking them by means of an arm 16, which bears on stops 17 at thc back of the plate 12.
