Electric railways and tramways.-Insulators for the live rails used in electric traction systems are made with grooves and lateral depending flanges so as to prevent the formation of a film of moisture on the insulator. As shown, the flanges g, j are formed by simple angular undercuts f, h, but undercuts may be made which are channelled in various ways. The surface b which supports the live rail is preferably of less width than the base of the rail, so that the latter overhangs the waterways d, which are bevelled off at k and may slope away from the centre. The walls e preferably rise above the base of the rail, and the insulator may be made in several parts.
