11,347. Thompson, W. P., [Goldschmidt, R., and Polziniusz, E.]. May 30. White lead, obtaining; carbonates, obtaining. - White lead or mixtures of white lead with various proportions of lead oxides are obtained by the electrolysis of a solution containing sodium acetate and carbonate, the proportions of the two constituents being so adjusted that peroxidation of the anodes and deposition of spongy lead on the cathodes are avoided. The proportion of carbonate is kept up by the introduction of carbonic acid either into the electrolytic cell itself, or by means of the apparatus diagrammatically shown. The anodes bare of thick sheet lead and the cathodes c of thin lead or other plates; from the electrolytic cell a, the electrolyte is allowed to flow into the vessel e, where the filter q retains the precipitated white lead ; from here it is pumped into a carbonating-vessel f, which is suitably heated and is connected either to a carbonic acid bottle by means of the reducing-valve k, or to some other source of the gas by means of a compressor l. The liquid when sufficiently saturated with carbonic acid is forced back into the electrolytic cell. The proportion of oxide in the precipitated product may be varied at will by varying the temperature or the pressure of the carbonic acid. Other metallic carbonates can be obtained by this process.
