Forging.-In forging buffer plungers for railway vehicles, the dies are so constructed that the shank can be forged or rolled and the head forged at one heat. The billet with the shank finished is placed in a lower die, shown in Fig. 1, and is slowly rotated while acted upon by an upper die, shown also in Figs. 3 and 4. This upper die is curved but has the central portion thinner than the ends a, the sides being cut away to form gaps b.
