Bricks.-In a method of and apparatus for sterilizing sewage sludge and other waste of an organic origin, the sludge is treated in a retort through which the steam is passed, the retort being heated to such a temperature that the fixed carbon is burned within the retort by the oxygen resulting from the decomposition of the steam. The material discharged from the retort may, after treatment dependent on the natura of the precipitant used, be used for such purposes as brickmaking and cement-making, or as a precipitant for fresh sludge. When lime has been used as a precipitant, the material may be mixed in a pugmill with 40 to 50 per cent of rough sand or clinker from refuse destructors and made into bricks.
