Towing-arrangements for; coupling, arrangements for.-In an arrange ment for connecting a trailer or a side-car to a motor or other bicycle or cycle in such a manner that the machine is held upright when left unattended, a plate i upon the towing-member h', Fig. 11, or side-car frame w4, Fig. 16, is place upon, below, or within the slot of, a plate b, Figs. 1 and 3, and retained in position by a pin k pasaed through holes in the two plates. The plate b is drawn down by means such as a spring or springs e upon the shoulders c of a member a which is bolted at l to a U-shaped piece m fixed to the rear-wheel spindle and to the chain stays at q, or which may be carried by an extension of the top bar, back stays, seat pillar, or other part of the frame. A bolt h upon the plate b moves in a vertical slot g in the member a. To reduce friction between the plates b, i, the upper and lower members of the slotted plate may carry rollers. In lieu of using a single plate b, as shown in Fig. 1, two plates separated by washers at the sides may be employed, and, in this case, the bolt h is carried by a U-shaped plate embracing the centre portion of the two plates. To retain the plate b more rigidly upon the shoulders c, Bowden mechanism connected to the plate and to a central spring e may be carried up to an operating-handle upon the handle-bars, so that the pressure of the plate upon the shoulders may be increased or adjusted as desired ; or a lever, cam, clip, or eccentric may be interposed between the plate and the Bowden-wire or other operating-mechanism. In a modification, the U-shaped member m, Fig. 13, carries a pillar t which, pivoted at t1, is held in a vertical position by springs e. The trailer arm u1 ends in a sleeve u which slides upon the pillar and rests upon an adjustable collar v. As shown in Fig. 16, the front end of the side-car is attached to the bottom tube of the cycle by a shouldered arrangement as first described, or by a universal, hinge, or ball joint w3. The invention is stated to be particularly applicable to side-cars or trailers such as are usel by tradesmen or for military purposes.
