Preserving fish.- In a machine for splitting fish, grips, carried by a rotating ring of plates, automatically close on the fish, previously to their being carried beneath a press where they meet a rotating knife ; afterwards, the grips are opened automatically to enable a claw to remove the split fish to a conveyer belt. Fig. 1 shows a vertical section of the apparatus, Fig. 3 a grip carrier, Fig. 7 the spring press, and Fig. 8 the splitting- mechanism. An intermittent motion round the central table 9 is given to the ring of grip-carriers 18, by a ratchet 25 carried by arms 13 radiating from the hub 12, and a pawl 27, actuated by the wheel 29 geared to the shaft 3. The grips consist of serrated plates 35, 39, of which the upper is mounted on a bar 40 carrying a friction roller 42 which co-operates with bars 50, 51 fixed to the table 9 to open and close the grips at intervals. The press consists of a series of spring-mounted serrated plates 53 which, under the operation of springs carried by the frame 55, 58, tend to close on the fish beneath, but are raised after each cutting by the eccentric stud 64 on the wheel 65. The splitting-mechanism comprises a pair of sprocket-wheels 74, 75, mounted on a bed-plate 72, cne of which is geared to a shaft 78 and so to the shafts 87, 22 and to the main shaft. A chain, gearing with the sprocket - wheels, carries the knives 91, 92, and is caused to describe an elliptical path by suitable guides, the knives entering a slot 70 in the plate 69 in their path. The knives mav receive an additional axial rotation from a shaft 95 through the gearing 106, 105, &c. The removing-mechanism consists of a claw 120 attached to a rod 119 pivoted to bars 117 which are caused to slide in and out by means of an eccentric stud 132 on the wheel 130. The driving- bevel gears with the bevel portion of a wheel the edge of which gears with the wheel 29. As the rod 119 rests on a fixed roller 122, the horizontal motion of the bars 117 gives the claw vertical movement simultaneously, so enabling it to remove the split fish on to the conveyer belt 135. In practice, there are a number of groups of cutting and removing mechanism arranged round the table 9 and driven from the main shaft 3 by radial shafts 22.
