Calcium carbide. - A composition for use in raising and maintaining the temperature of materials under treatment, in the manufacture of calcium carbide and other processes, consists of calcium carbide, manganese dioxide, bituminous coal, aluminium, and potassium chlorate. In the manufacture of calcium carbide, limestone is heated, carbonaceous material is added, and the mixture is heated to incandescence, the above composition is added to the heated mass, and the whole is then transferred to an electric or other furnace and fused. The heated carbide in the composition assists in keeping up the temperature, the manganese dioxide and potassium chlorate give off oxygen, which promotes the burning of the carbide, while the aluminium reduces the carbon monoxide or dioxide formed and also takes up any phosphorus present in the materials, converting it into phosphate.
